When should my child first see a dentist?

By their first birthday — or within 6 months of their first tooth coming in, whichever is earlier. Early visits build comfort and let us catch tiny problems while they're still tiny. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends this, and so do we.

How do I know if my child has a cavity?

Common signs: chalky white or brown spots on teeth, complaints about pain when chewing or drinking cold drinks, and bad breath that doesn't go away after brushing. But many cavities have zero symptoms — which is why regular checkups are so important. When in doubt, call us.

My child is terrified of the dentist. Can you help?

This is the reason Big Top was built. Our entire office — the circus tent, the colors, the TVs — is designed to flip the script on "scary dentist." Dr. Trueblood has a reputation for putting even the most anxious kids at ease, and we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) when helpful. Hundreds of Cedar Park parents have told us their child asked to come back. We'll get yours there too.

Do you accept our insurance?

We accept most major dental plans including Medicaid, CHIP, and most PPOs. Our front desk team verifies your specific benefits before your visit so there are zero surprise bills. Chat with Melissa or book online and she'll confirm your coverage!

Can I come back with my child during the exam?

Yes — parents are always welcome. We believe kids do best when they feel safe, and sometimes that means Mom or Dad is right there. Our team will walk you both through exactly what we're doing so nothing feels like a surprise.

How often should kids see the dentist?

Every 6 months for most kids — twice a year keeps small problems from becoming big ones. Some children with higher cavity risk may need to come every 3–4 months. We'll tell you exactly what schedule makes sense for your child after the first visit.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. We use digital X-rays, which expose kids to up to 90% less radiation than traditional film. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary — never as a routine every visit. We always weigh the benefit against any risk, and we'll explain exactly what we're looking for before we take any images.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

Chat with Melissa immediately for dental emergencies — knocked-out tooth, severe pain, swelling, or a broken tooth — we treat these as urgent and will get your child seen same day. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, keep it moist (in milk or in the child's cheek) and head to us or an ER right away.

Can you do the exam AND treatment in one visit?

We try to — whenever possible. We know parents can't always take two days off work. When clinically appropriate, Dr. Trueblood will complete exams and same-day treatment together so your family walks out with everything handled.
